Competitions

Taking Part

In Archery you can compete from a very early stage, in other words there is no skill level that you need to reach in order to compete. In fact tournaments welcome inexperienced archers, after all, how else would you get the experience!

You first year of shooting is the Novice year and many open tournaments have a novice category to compete in; All of our club competitions have one!

Be practical in choosing an event. Our club’s events should be an easy choice for your first competition. As a member you can take part in our club’s championships, they are not open to non members or non affiliates. On the other hand, our club’s open tournaments, for example the Short Metric in September, are open to all AGB archers from any club who wish to come and compete. See our tournaments page for more details and talk to one of the coaches if you have any questions.

Outside our club you will find a lot of tournaments over the year, Laura’s list of local tournaments is quite accesible as all these events are within 1h drive from our area.

Laura’s List

This is Laura’s list, with Cake Ratings! Keep those events in your radar as they are poppular with our members and not too far to visit. For specific dates please click on the links to visit their website and for a place in their tournament don’t leave it too long.

What’s Next

Every club has it’s own way of running tournaments. They advertise and usualy issue a form to fill in, sometimes accompanied by a prospectus stating all the necessary details you need to take part.

Read the information available. This is very important as it is possible to arrive at a tournament only to be refused to shoot because you did not comply to the organiser’s rules; it’s a long way back so ask if something it not clear!

Make sure you have the right equipment for the event. For example a barebow will be inspected for size, arrows will be checked for name or initials, numbers and thickness, amongst other things… Know your equipment, how to change nocks, fletchings, arrow rests, a spare string or a finger tab and anything else you might need to have handy!

Plan for a long day, make it a comfortable day. A tournament lasts for many hours, you will need a chair, a drink, something to eat, a shade, sunscreen, mosquito repelent, battery charger and whatever else you need that others don’t.

Spend more time at the range. It’s true what they say that having a competition ahead of you increases the time spent on the field shooting. On top of that, picking a number of events over the season will get you the necessary scores to claim a classification like Archer and Bowman, i.e. badges!

Be there! Last but not least, you get the chance to represent your club, the Bowmen of Warfield which is how we got our good name and how we kept it over the years!
