Award Schemes

February 18, 2025

Collecting badges is an exciting way to enhance your skills and challenge yourself in archery. Some even joke that it’s a sport where you spend thousands of pounds on equipment just to earn badges worth pennies!

Offical Awards

There are several official schemes and programmes run by the World Archery Federation and Archery GB, our governing body. For more details and the latest information, please follow the links to their official pages. For most of these official awards you will need your coach’s sign off.

Unoffical Awards

There are also some unofficial awards and our club runs several schemes that are highly popular across the UK. We’ve prepared a short guide on these programmes.

Your coach should be able to assist you with advice and explain how the rules apply.

To claim your badge just drop an email to our Records Officer (records@bowmenofwarfield.co.uk) and have the score in your Archery Records to verify.

By the way, these are the rules we run those schemes under and they may differ from other clubs!

The 252 Award Scheme

The “252 award” scheme encourages archers to improve their technique and accuracy by achieving a score of 252 or better at increasing distances, with badges awarded for achieving this score at specific distances.

Objective

The scheme aims to promote steady improvement in archery by encouraging archers to work on their technique and accuracy at increasing distances.

How it works

  • Archers shoot 36 arrows (3 dozen) at a 122cm target face using GNAS five-zone scoring, aiming for a score of 252 or better.
  • The scheme covers distances of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, and 100 yards.
  • The 252 score is achieved by averaging 7 points per arrow (or 42 per end of 6 arrows).
  • Once an archer achieves the required score at a specific distance, they are awarded a badge displaying the distance and the legend “252”.

Rules

  • Six sighter arrows are permitted, but do not count towards the final score.
  • Scores must be recorded on a properly completed score sheet.
  • A signed and witnessed score sheet need to be submitted and make an award claim.
  • You may attempt as many times as you like on the day.

Other Bow Types

For compound bows, the required score is 280, and for barebow and longbow, the required scores are lower.  Please see the table below to find the score required for your bow type.

The Frostbite Scheme

The Frostbite award scheme is a popular winter archery activity where archers shoot a short round of 3 dozen arrows at 30 meters on an 80cm target face, with badges awarded for achieving certain scores.

A shorter distance at 15 or 20 meters is also available for beginners, we call it Snowflake.

Purpose

The Frostbite round is designed to encourage archery practice during the winter months when outdoor shooting conditions are often challenging.

How it works

  • Archers shoot 36 arrows at a distance of 30 meters.
  • The target is an 80cm face with 10-zone scoring.
  • There are 6 sighters before the 36 arrows are shot
  • Badges are awarded for achieving specific scores, ranging from 200 to 355.
  • Overal awards are given at the end of the season based on handicap.

Rules

  • Shooting outdoors in the winter months when it’s cold outside.
  • Must be during the official and bonus frostbite shooting meetings.
  • Scoresheets must be submitted with 2 signatures and all boxes filled.
  • The Frostbite round is shot under Archery GB rules
  • All bow types are eligible

Check our Club Calendar to find out when the next Frostbite Shoot is scheduled and please read our guidelines on Arriving at Club Shoots and The Scoresheet for some useful advice and etiquette tips.

What it is

The scheme recognizes archers’ achievements in the indoor Portsmouth round, a popular shooting round.

A Portsmouth

A Portsmouth is an imperial round, shot indoors, 60 arrows (5 doz) at 20 yards distance on a 60cm 10 zone scoring target. It is very popular for the indoor season.

How it works

  • Badges are awarded based on the scores achieved in a Portsmouth round.
  • The first badge is usually awarded for a score of 300, with subsequent badges awarded for each 25-point increase.
  • Some clubs may have different starting points or badge increments.
  • You only need to achieve the score once to earn the badge.
  • Scoresheets must be submitted with 2 signatures and all boxes filled.
  • Submit your score sheet or tournament results to our records officer to claim the badge.

Notes

Recently it has been allowed to claim a badge by submitting scores shot at outdoors sessions. The badge can be claimed by submitted any score, be it from club shoots, practice shoots that are scored and of course from tournaments with the results submitted to the records officer.
